One of the five first growths of Bordeaux, and probably the most famous of them all. Located right at the northern limit of Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend with the soil made up of fine deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sand on a subsoil of tertiary limestone. It is well-drained and well-exposed to the sun. The finesse and elegance at Lafite is undeniable.

Its amazing to visit this vineyard located as it is in a surprisingly urban location inside the south west city perimeter. The oldest of the first growths, the vineyard is made up of of roughly equal percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with about ten percent Cabernet Franc, oh and one percent Petit Verdot. The wines are often restrained and aristocratic in their youth opening up to reveal incredible complexity with beautifully spicy tabacco and cedar aromas. Truly outstanding.

Mouton Rothschild became a first growth in 1973 due to the extra-ordinary dedication and hard work of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. His pioneering approach is epitomised in the decision since 1945 to commission a different artist to design the label for each new vintage, payment for which is reputedly offered in the shape of five cases of the bottled wine.
