The twelth century marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry II of England increased mutual trade and sparked the British love affair with the wines of the Bordeaux region. Of course the allied benefits have long gone as claret, now the most collected and treasured wine in the world carries a price tag to match. The red wines are made predominantly from a blend of three main grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, as well as the lesser known but increasing varietal Petit Verdot. The famous Bordeaux blend is copied with considerable success in many new world wine regions, a tribute to the Bordelais' wine-making skills crafted over the centuries. Bordeaux is naturally divided into sub-regions by the Gironde River. The Left Bank boasts the great Chateaux of the Medoc and Graves, whilst on the Right Bank, Saint Emilion, arguably the most beautiful commune, is neighboured by the tiny but no less famous commune of Pomerol. The Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle blends of the Sauternes and Barsac are amongst the greatest of the world's dessert wines, epitomised by Chateau Yquem. The dry white wines are becoming more sought after too, particularly from Pessac Leognan commune in the Graves region
A Merlot dominated Bordeaux Rouge from this very sensibly priced Entre Deux Mers property, located near the village of Creon, not far from Saint Emilion. Very popular with our clients, a great everyday claret with a supple palate and fine aromas, particularly in the extra special 2009 vintage.
This is a great value Bordeaux Red from the Pessac-Leognan district, famous for the first growth Chateau Haut Brion, just south of Bordeaux City. The wines from this region are distinctive, easy to drink with an earthy spicy backbone.
Situated in the Entre-Deux-Mers area of Bordeaux, Chateau Lamothe-Vincent is made up of two main pieces, one lying at Montignac and the other situated at Castelvieil. The grape blend is made up of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturation in French and American oak barrels (33% new) for 12 months, with a slow oxidisation process giving the wine a well rounded and rich finish while still maintaining the subtle presence of fruit. An ideal match for red meats, pasta, red sauces and cheese. The 2011 did exceptionally well in a recent Decanter Magazine article assessing Bordeaux and Superieur and Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux.
The Cuvée Prestige is the result of a strictly-controlled maturing process, in barrels made of oak from the Tronçais forest, which contribute harmoniously to its complexity.

The Merlot dominated Moulin de Paumirac offers a chance taste wines made in the same vein as the great Pomerol wines, from similar terroir, at a fraction of the cost.
The Grand Ormeau is made in a modern style, offering polished tannins and gererous aromas of black cherrries and raspberries, with a touch of new wood, this 2007 version is particularly easy going, a real charmer.

The 2000 Vintage Bordeaux Vintage will be remembered as one of the finest in a generation, we are fortunate to still have a few bottles remaining of this excellent Cru Bourgeois now at its peak, revealing the classic cigar box nose, and a fine delicate palate, with resolved tannins the texture is terrific. A great lunchtime wine.
